Release Notes

Import from Spreadsheet to a SharePoint List is the missing facet to the WSS 3.0 / MOSS 2007 List
features. SharePoint lets a user create a custom list from a spreadsheet, export data from a SharePoint List
to a spreadsheet, but lacks the ability to import new data to an existing SharePoint list.

This SharePoint feature developed in C# .Net is an easy to install and intuitive to use feature that will allow
a user to select an Excel spreadsheet, map the SharePoint list columns to the spreadsheet columns (top
row in the sheet) and import data.

This feature works in WSS 3.0 and MOSS 2007 environments. (x86 systems or 32-bit servers only).
Note: A version of this feature compatible with the 64-bit servers will be made available shortly.

Version 1.2
Addressed Issues:
1) "Incorrect Format" exception thrown due a Permissions issue was found in future investigation of this feature from remote servers. This has been addressed.
2) When a list is renamed after creating it, "Page not found error" was thrown after the completion of Importing the spreadhseet data. This issue has been addressed.

Note: This feature fails to import data into "People and group" column as it fails to internally convert a string to People/Group object.

Installation Procedure:
1) Run the given ImportSpreadsheetToSPList.exe file.
2) Select the Sites where you wish to install this feature in the installation wizard.
3) After successful installation, activate the feature in the SharePoint Site collection features for all the sites.
4) Once activated, Import from Spreadsheet feature will be available of the Actions menu of all the SharePoint lists.

A detailed installation guide is available in the readme file provided in the feature download.

Reviews for this release

I received the Incorrect Format error when trying to upload from an Excel 2007 format. When I saved the same file in .xls format it worked. However I also received the Page not found error and have not been able to work around that.

This feature is awesome!! Nice & easy to install and use. However it would be great if it can cater for overwriting existing records feature so that all duplicates can be removed.

Still an issue with the error "Incorrect Format" when I try to open a spreadsheet, I have FULL control on the Temp folder unders LAYOUTS but that doesn't change the problem. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Jaap

The Problem with the "Incorrect Format" can be solved just adding rights as full control to the user into the folder "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS\Temp", but in general it is a very good tool

This is a brilliant tool to transfer data from Excel spreadsheets to SharePoint lists. I used it in a project to transfer contacts from a legacy application to a SharePoint site (SQL server 2005 --> Excel --> SharePoint --> Outlook). My Excel spreadsheet has 1064 rows and 41 columns. This tool successfully imported them to a list. It is similar to Bamboo List Bulk Import, but it is free. Good job!
